Tips & Ideas
Target runs this deal every year and here it is again. It’s always a popular offer and as with the past year or two, you have to load the Target Circle digital coupon in order to get the discount. Also note that it doesn’t start until 3am ET on Saturday morning.
Now, time for a few very important notes.
1) If you do this deal online, be aware that Target will lock the Target gift cards to your account. That means the cards can’t be resold, so only do this deal online if you can make use of the Target gift cards for personal use. Update: Unlike most of their gift card deals, because you’re buying these gift cards standalone rather than getting them as bonus gift cards by buying other third party gift cards, these shouldn’t get locked to your account whether buying digital or physical cards online.
2) Every year people scale this deal. If doing that though, be aware that this can be very risky. Target doesn’t appreciate when people do this and they’ve been known to cancel the gift cards and drag their heels over refunding credit cards. Some cashiers will be on the lookout for people taking advantage of this offer more than once and some have managed to get those cards cancelled after the purchase too. People do still have success buying more than $500 worth of cards, but it’s important you’re aware that this deal is unlike most other deals you might try to scale.
3) Given past issues with these types of deals, even if you’re not gaming the offer I’d avoid paying with Visa or Mastercard gift cards because if the Target cards get cancelled and you get refunded, it can be a pain to work out which Visa or Mastercard has a refund on it if you’ve not kept good records. Definitely don’t throw the Visa or Mastercard gift cards away after making a purchase, just in case.
4) It’s not worth paying with a Target RedCard as you don’t get 5% off when buying Target gift cards. As a result, a Discover It card could be best as Target is at 5% cashback this quarter if you’ve not already maxed it out.
5) If trying to scale the deal, never use the same payment card twice.
One other thing to add is that it’s worth clicking through a portal, just in case. I’ve had these purchases track and pay out on occasion, although usually they don’t.
Which portal did you use when it worked?
I think RetailMeNot paid out once or twice. Rakuten and BeFrugal tracked but got zeroed out later.
One other point: I am not completely sure, but I believe cards purchased online are not locked to your account if you order physical cards to be mailed to you, as opposed to e-cards that are e-mailed to you.
that’s a good idea to be able to resell the card
For payment options, I used PayPal + Chase Freedom for x5UR.
