When taking advantage of Amex Offers, American Express awards points based on the amount of spend after the statement credit has been taken into account.
For example, let’s say you spend exactly $75 at Bloomingdale’s to trigger the $15 statement credit from this Amex Offer. American Express will award you points/miles/cashback based on $60 of spend as that’s the amount of spend after the statement credit.
I was curious how Chase would deal with this now that they’re rolling out more and more Chase Offers. Would they provide credit card rewards based on the pre- or post-statement credit amount of spend? Well, it’s good news – they provide rewards based on the full amount of spend.
I verified this after redeeming the Staples Chase Offer on business cards. My Chase Ink Plus card was targeted for the 20% version of the offer that gives up to $34 back on $170 of spend. I bought a $200 Visa gift card last week while Staples was selling them fee-free. The statement credit of $34 was awarded five days later.
When checking my Ultimate Rewards statement, Chase awarded 1,000 points which means they based it on the full $200 of spend rather than on $166 of spend after the statement credit.
That means I earned 170 points more than I would have if it was based on the post-statement credit amount of spend. That’s not a huge amount, but it means Chase Offers are a little more rewarding than I’d originally anticipated.

Which I find ridiculous! You spent $75. What next, will they refuse to count the difference toward the MSR? I think we have entered class action territory. Unbelievable.
