Update 9/3/20: If you signed up for Fluz a couple of months ago to take advantage of the Shop Small Amex Offer, you received 3 vouchers which are good for up to 35% bonus cashback on select gift card brands, with a limit of $3.50 bonus cashback per voucher.
Those vouchers expire after 60 days, so unless you signed up for Fluz more recently, those vouchers will be expiring in the next few days.
Update 7/8/20: Despite my initial skepticism as to whether the Shop Small Amex Offer would be triggering the $5 statement credits for Fluz transactions all the time, there’s good news – it is!
When checking my statement this morning, I have a $15 credit from ‘Fluz New York’ showing. This is a little strange as I only made a couple of purchases, whereas a $15 credit would suggest I’d made three purchases.
One reason might be that I verified my Amex card with Fluz which results in them making a small charge to your card for verification. That amount was only $2.xx though, so below the $10 threshold that’s in theory needed to earn the $5 credit.
A more likely reason though is that I spent $32.50 across my two actual purchases and cumulative purchases work for the credit. So rather than me earning two $5 statement credits for two transactions of $10 or more, I earned three $5 statement credits for two transactions totaling $30 or more.
Further update: Based on comments below and over on Frequent Miler, it looks like the cumulative value of your spending doesn’t count – you’ll only receive one statement credit of $5 for every $10+ transaction you make. It seems as though my $15 statement credit was a one-off.
According to reports on Doctor of Credit, purchases in the Fluz app might be triggering the Shop Small Amex Offer which gives $5 back when spending $10+.
That’s a great deal if true because it means buying a $10 gift card will earn you $5 cashback from Amex along with the additional cashback offered by Fluz.
I said “if true” because I haven’t been able to verify this yet. I made a couple of $10+ purchases in the Fluz app this evening using my Amex Gold card and I’ve not received any kind of email notification confirming that the transaction triggered the statement credit. It’s always hit and miss as to whether Amex sends those emails, so I’m going to have to wait a few days to see if the statement credit actually shows up.
One thing that might affect this is whether the transaction shows up on your statement as Fluz or FluzPay. I saw a recent data point that a ‘FluzPay’ transaction didn’t code as online shopping on the Bank of America Cash Rewards credit card and so didn’t earn 3% cashback. When checking this for myself, I noticed that I’d received 3% cashback, but my transaction posted as ‘Fluz’ rather than ‘FluzPay’.
The reason that might be relevant is that the purchases I made using my Amex Gold card showed up on my statement as ‘Fluz’, while it seems that people who received an email from Amex confirming they’d used the Shop Small Amex Offer had their purchases show up on their statement as ‘FluzPay’.
To test this, I bought a $15 Amazon gift card (seeing as that’s the lowest denomination) and that didn’t trigger an email from Amex. Based on data points I’d seen, it seemed like it might work on Uber Eats gift cards, so I bought a $17.50 card to max out one of my Fluz Vouchers seeing as I’d earn 20% cashback on top of the 1.5% standard cashback. That didn’t trigger an email either.
I figured that my use of a Voucher might have affected that Uber Eats transaction, so I tested it out on my wife’s account. She didn’t receive an email from Amex either and the pending transaction showed up on her statement as ‘Fluz’ rather than ‘FluzPay’ too.
I’ll republish this post with an update later this week once I know if our purchases have indeed triggered the $5 statement credits.
If you decide to test this for yourself, note that you’ll only need to spend $10 when buying a gift card. Fluz offers cashback rather than an instant discount, so you’ll never pay less than $10 even if using a Voucher for 35% cashback.
If you’ve not used Fluz yet, here’s my referral link. You’ll receive 3 vouchers for up to 35% bonus cashback on select $10 gift cards, while I’ll receive 1 voucher for 35% off. Also be sure to check out the complete guide to Fluz that I put together.
@Stephen Pepper, so can you clarify that the offer will be triggered for both Fluz and FluzPay purchases? Thanks.
Yes, it certainly seems to be. I only had transactions for ‘Fluz’ showing up on my statement and they’ve all triggered the offer. Other people who had ‘FluzPay’ show on their statement received emails from Amex confirming they’d used the offer, so I’m assuming they’ve received the statement credits too.
I took a shot and purchased a $100 gift card code for Home Depot from Fluz. (I was going shopping at HD anyway.)
Amex only gave me one $5 credit, not $50.
Thanks for the data point. Based on comments over at Frequent Miler as well, it seems like everyone else is only getting statement credits based the number of transactions they made, rather than their cumulative spend – I’ll update the post.
I just bought 5-$10 codes for Walmart and I got 5-$5 credits from Amex. (They sent me the confirmation emails. I understand it takes a few days to actually post the credit to my account.)
If it matters, I have an Amex gold personal card.
How do I link my Bluebird card to Flaz?
I meant Fluz. Fluz only shows AmericanExpress.com Personal Savings in the app. I dont have login for that only for Bluebird account. Please help.
In the Fluz app, tap the menu button in the top right corner (the three horizontal lines). From there, tap ‘Accounts and Cards’ and add the card you want to use there.
