Fluz has made a change in their app today and are now offering several different cashback rates for each gift card brand sold in the app depending on the payment method that you use.
They used to have an element of this as they offered a higher cashback rate when paying from your bank account versus other payment methods. As you can see from the screenshot above, that’s now changed to four different cashback rates based on the following payment methods:
- PayPal
- Credit card
- Debit card
- Bank/ACH
In most cases the tiered bonus rates are 0%/1%/2%/3%, but with some brands the tiers are different. For example, Amazon is 0%/0.5%/1.5%/2.5% respectively.
I was a little dubious about this change initially, figuring that the Bank/ACH rate would be whatever the old cashback rate was, with the other payment options effectively being decreased as a result of this change. From what I can tell though, that’s not the case – it looks like the old cashback rates are what’s offered when paying by PayPal, with the other payment options offering a higher rate than you would’ve received in the past. If that’s truly the case, this is a great update from Fluz as no one loses out based on what they used to offer – you either get the same rate as you always did by paying by PayPal, or you get a better rate.
There are a couple of things to be aware of based on my initial impressions. If you have a Chase Ink Plus or Ink Cash card, you might still want to pay by PayPal using one of those cards as the rewards you earn might still outweigh what you’d earn by paying with a different credit card outside of PayPal. That’ll vary depending on the gift card brand you buy and whatever other credit card you’d use to pay with seeing as Fluz now passes along coding in a number of categories.
I also tested out paying by PayPal Key and it only earned 1% additional cashback which means Fluz views it as a credit card rather than anything else which is a bit of a shame.
Stephen, thank you for all of your posts over the past year regarding Fluz. They have been helpful primers as I recently signed up (with your referral of course!)
Can you please explain this sentence you wrote above? I thought Chase Ink Cash ( visa) no longer earns 5x at PayPal? Thanks in advance!
“If you have a Chase Ink Plus or Ink Cash card, you might still want to pay by PayPal using one of those cards as the rewards you earn might still outweigh what you’d earn by paying with a different credit card outside of PayPal.”
It doesn’t earn 5x with PayPal Digital Gifts. However, when buying gift cards in Fluz, try paying with PayPal using your Ink Cash and check the results in terms of points earned.
Ahhh…..I didn’t understand the distinction. Thank you for confirming.
