Target has once again taken aim at gift card resellers. A couple of years ago they made a negative change to how online deals work which meant that any time you bought a gift card that came with a Target gift card free, the Target gift card would become locked to your account and so you couldn’t resell it.
As a result of that change for online purchases, a lot of people decided to purchase the same deals in-store. That had a couple of benefits. One was that the Target gift card didn’t get locked to your account, so you could resell it. Another benefit was that you could reload the same gift card. That was appealing because it meant you didn’t end up with a ton of $5, $10 or $15 Target gift cards. Instead, you could reload the same card over and over until it had a nice round figure like $100, $250, $500, etc. Those higher denominations tend to have better resale rates, plus it greatly reduced the hassle of selling a bunch of smaller denomination cards.
Well, no longer. Target has implemented a new policy which means that you can no longer reload the same Target gift card. This isn’t some kind of temporary glitch either – they’ve explicitly listed this new policy on their website:
How do I reload my Target GiftCard?
Effective April 2023, Target GiftCards can no longer be reloaded.
Please note, the following gift card types are not reloadable:
- Target GiftCards
- Specialty gift cards for music, gaming and restaurants, such as iTunes, Xbox and Olive Garden.
- Third-party gift cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express gift cards.
That’s going to greatly limit the appeal of deals like the ‘Buy $100 Apple gift card, get $10 Target gift card free‘ offer which is live at the time of publishing this post. Unless, of course, you can actually make use of the plethora of low denomination cards…..
April 2nd, I was able to load the same card 5 times to $50.
