When it comes to gift card deals, Stop & Shop only seems to want to live up to the first part of their name rather than the latter.
With the recent 3x offer on Visa gift cards, I noticed that Stop & Shop had listed a new restriction in their weekly ad stating that you’re limited to one gift card offer per household. It wasn’t clear exactly what that meant; did it mean you could:
- Only earn 3x points on one Visa gift card?
- Only earn 3x points on one purchase but which could include several Visa gift cards?
- Buy as many gift cards as you wanted up to some unspecified limit which constituted “one gift card offer per household”?
It looks like the latter might be the case as a couple of days ago a new hard-coded limit appears to have been instituted limiting you to earning bonus points on gift card purchases of up to $2,000 per week, with the week presumably running Friday to Thursday. You’ll still be able to buy more than $2,000 worth of gift cards for eligible brands each week, you just won’t earn bonus points on purchases over the limit.
With this being a new rule there’s still some uncertainty. For example, this week’s promotion is offering 5x points when buying Lowe’s, Happy and Giving Good gift cards. Does the $2,000 limit apply to cumulative purchases for all three brands combined, or can you buy $2,000 worth of Lowe’s, $2,000 of Happy and $2,000 of Giving Good? I’m not sure, so let us know in the comments below if you end up testing this limit.
This is obviously a disappointing development as it makes it a little more hassle to scale some of the better deals. Hopefully Giant and Martin’s don’t follow suit.

Did this happen to you personally on the visa gift card offer ending last Thursday? If there’s a new limit it better be in the printed ad. Points no longer print on the receipt so people won’t even know this happened immediately.
It apparently wasn’t an issue on the recent Visa gift card deal despite the restriction being listed in the weekly ad, but in the last couple of days they’ve started enforcing the limit based on what I’ve been advised.
I haven’t experienced any issues getting points for over $2k in VGCs during the last promo, but will be careful during the next one.
Confirming points awarded for multiple VGC purchases last week but only on the first $2k Happy Card purchase with the current promo.
Thank you for the data point, will have to look into loading multiple accounts I guess. Had a weird issue happen to me in the fall, S&S ‘merged’ my and my brother’s accounts and my points were shared across the two, even though we had different card numbers. Have to make sure that cards I am loading are not linked to the same account / household.
