Good news if you’ve previously been unable to register for the American Airlines SimplyMiles card-linked program – you now only need a Mastercard in order to join.
When SimplyMiles ran an excellent promotion at the end of last year, I tried registering my wife for SimplyMiles so that we could double up on the offers, but wasn’t successful. That’s because at the time they required that you had either a Citi or Barclays AAdvantage credit card and my wife had neither.
Fast forward to yesterday and Shae got an email from American Airlines inviting her to join SimplyMiles. Notably, the email stated that she only needed a Mastercard and an American Airlines account – there was no mention of needing an AA-branded credit card.
Figuring it was worth a try, I tried registering her for SimplyMiles again this evening and this time it worked.
She doesn’t have a ton of great offers listed at the moment, although there are offers for Best Buy, Walgreens and CVS, all of which might prove useful for gift card deals.
What I’d love now is for SimplyMiles to add the ability to link Visa and American Express credit cards so that it’s easier to stack with Amex Offers, Chase Offers, BankAmeriDeals, etc. When entering one of Shae’s Mastercards to register, there was a checkbox that said the following:
By checking this box and entering my payment card information, I authorize my Payment Card Network (Mastercard, Visa, American Express) to monitor and share transaction data associated with my registered payment card (including spending history) with American and its third party service providers in accordance with the SimplyMiles Program Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
I noticed that wording several weeks ago when adding some cards to my own account, but it rejected any Visa or American Express cards that I tried adding. However, the fact that they’ve included that wording suggests it might be something they have in the pipeline.
[…] Update 2/4/20: You no longer need a cobranded American Airlines credit card to use SimplyMiles. So long as you have an AA miles account and a Mastercard, you can make use of the program. (ht GCG) […]
