Great news for those of you that don’t live near a Simon Mall – you can now register to buy $1,000 Visa gift cards online.
There’s a lot to be aware of regarding the process – here are some of the key things:
- Approval is manual and you have to provide ID, your SSN, etc.
- You can have your name printed on the cards.
- There’s a $10 processing fee per order, plus a shipping fee (depending on shipping type and location).
- You can only pay with one card per order – no split tender. You can place multiple orders using different cards, but you’ll pay a $10 processing fee per order.
- Maximum order size is $25,000.
- Each card you add requires manual approval, which could take a few days. In the meantime, your account goes into pending status, so if you want to place an order with an existing card, it’s best to do that before registering a new one.
There’s more to the process, so be sure to check out Nick’s post on Frequent Miler which has even more detail. If you have a Simon Mall location near you, this online option probably won’t be worthwhile once their malls reopen due to the processing and shipping fees. However, if you live far from a Simon Mall, this online option could be useful, especially if you have non-Amex cards with big spending requirements.
As Nick notes in the post, it’s also not worth buying these now if it means you’ll be having to take more trips to the grocery store than you need to. However, depending on the size of your order, it might be possible to liquidate them while doing your grocery shop.
