Update 4/29/22: Reader EW reached out to give a heads up about a potential issue his wife had when taking advantage of this deal. She bought a $21 gift card and got the $20 off as expected.
However, a minute later she received an email from PayPal stating the following:
Your cash back offer has been declined. The cash back offer we extended to you has been misused. We are therefore revoking it from your account. Questions? Please do not reply to this email. To contact us, click Contact at the bottom of any PayPal page. We are unable to respond to account inquiries sent in response to this email. This email is not for marketing purposes; it contains information about servicing your account. If you previously opted out of marketing communications from us, those preferences do not apply to this email.
The good news is that the $20 hasn’t been reversed out of her account, so hopefully that remains to be the case. Based on this email though, it does seem like there’s some kind of automated check going on regarding this offer, so be aware that buying a gift card could result in this offer being revoked.

Tips & Ideas
To find this offer on your PayPal account, log in at the link above and scroll down to the ‘Save when you pay in-store with PayPal’ section. Click the right arrow until you see the image at the top of this post, click that and save the offer to your account. When you go to check out at CVS, pay with a QR code in order to get the $20 discount which will work on gift cards in addition to anything else CVS sells.
Update: It seems like there’s some kind of glitch when trying to save this in the PayPal app, but saving it on desktop seems to work. Thanks to K Johnson & EW for the heads up about that.

Hasn’t this offer been running for a year now?
The one you are thinking of might have been the $10 off with initial QR code purchase. This is a slight variation on that and doesn’t seem to require that the transaction be your first purchase using QR Code. I’m going for a $25 Amazon GC.
Yes, I can confirm it’s a new offer! I participated in the old offer that required ‘first’ QR code purchase at CVS last year, and I successfully redeemed this new offer today.
Thanks; I got an error saving the offer in the app but saved it fine on my computer. I just redeemed the offer so good to go.
If a web browser version says “Sorry your offer didn’t save” should I assume all redemptions are taken?
They could at least state in the terms that gift cards are ineligible. They don’t really say anything about misuse at all.
Does the offer have to be saved first before it will work? I keep getting error on both desktop and mobile version when trying to save offer.
Yes, I think it has to be saved first. If it’s not letting you do that, it might have been maxed out.
