Update 5/17/21: The sale of Speedway from Marathon to 7-Eleven finally completed on Friday (May 14) despite competition concerns from regulators. There haven’t been any changes on the gift card/Speedy Rewards front yet, but that’s to be expected. It remains to be seen whether 7-Eleven will, in effect, let Speedway be a standalone entity, or if they’ll make changes which could include changes to the Speedy Rewards program.
If they do end up making changes it’s unlikely that it’ll be for the better seeing as the 7-Rewards program has poor redemption options and you don’t earn points on gift card purchases other than during temporary promotions. If we’re incredibly lucky though, 7-Eleven will realize the error of their rewards program ways and roll out the Speedy Rewards program to their own stores. That’s highly, highly unlikely, but we can hope.
Marathon announced tonight that it’ll be selling its chain of Speedway gas stations to the owner of 7-Eleven for $21 billion.
I’ve only recently discovered the joys of Speedway’s Speedy Rewards program when it comes to buying gift cards, so hopefully this sale doesn’t have a negative impact on that program in the coming months and years.
There’s no news yet as to how 7-Eleven plans on incorporating Speedway into its company, so we’ll have to wait and see if they plan on maintaining the Speedway brand or if they’ll rebrand them as 7-Eleven gas stations and stores.
In an ideal world, the owner of 7-Eleven would deem the Speedy Rewards program so valuable that they extend it to 7-Eleven stores as well. That would make it easier for people who don’t currently have a Speedway near them to take advantage of credit cards that offer bonused spend at gas stations. Although some 7-Eleven stores allow you to pay for gift cards with a credit card, the last couple I went to were cash-only.
Thanks for sharing. All too often these transactions reduce the competition and ultimately dilute respective rewards programs. While we can and should hope for the best, it’s not unlikely that Speedway used their rewards programs as a tool to appear more attractive as they were seeking a suitor. 7-11 is certainly not known for an indulgent rewards program. Probably worth carefully watching for how the integration impacts the customer experience in the near term and the long term.
Very good points – it’ll be interesting to see how it progresses.
Wow you must have taken an hour to contrive that speech about nothing.
Will 7 11 honor speedway gas gift cards.
We don’t know yet as I don’t think the sale has been finalized. Once the purchase has gone through, we’ll likely hear more about how 7-Eleven will proceed with Speedway.
Where I live there are no Speedways for 20 miles but 7-11s are on every block.
Is there any information yet on speedway gift cards being honored by
7 ELEVEN?? This is almost end of February 2021. And I have $$ gift cards o don’t want to loose that money
I think it’s fairly safe to assume that Speedway gift cards will still retain their value.
I have been earning points on VGC purchases at 7-11
how many pts for a $500 vgc? 500? thx
Gift cards (and all merchandise) earn at a 20x rate, so you get 10,000 Speedy Rewards points for a $500 VGC.
7-11 is the new Amazon. They are becoming a monopoly. The rewards program and the Speedy freezes, along with all of Speedway’s other perks, are going to disappear. It’s just a matter of time. What a joke, there is nothing good left for consumers. When something is to our benefit, it doesn’t last.
