Kroger used to only sell physical Visa and Mastercard gift cards online. That’s changed because you can now buy digital versions of Visa and Mastercard gift cards here and here.
If you have an easy online liquidation method for them, digital versions might be more preferable to physical cards seeing as you a) don’t have to wait for them to arrive in the mail and b) don’t have to worry about them getting lost in the mail.
The nice thing is that these digital Visa and Mastercard gift cards are eligible for the different deals that Kroger runs every couple of weeks online. For example, at the time of publishing this post they’re offering $10 off when buying $150+ Visa or Mastercard gift cards and using promo code TURKEY22.
As with their physical counterparts though, Kroger only sells fixed-rate $25, $50 and $100 cards with high purchase fees relative to the value loaded on them. That makes them less enticing than buying variable load cards in-store, especially seeing as gift card purchases from Kroger online don’t code as a grocery purchase. The 2x or 4x fuel points you earn on the purchase can help make up for that though.
You noted: “If you have an easy online liquidation method for them, digital versions might be more preferable to physical cards….”
Operative word being, “if.” Have no experience using on-line visa or m/c gift cards…. Guessing you couldn’t use them in store with merchants? (or like with sco @ KR)….
Curiously, even the disboards comment thread you link above has lots of folks noting failures — no tips on actually how to best (or even if) to use them…. ?
Apparent correction to my guess: fine print says they can be used anywhere visa or m/c gc’s are accepted…. (once you call in to activate them) Not sure what all the fussing is about over at dishpanboards… 😉
One other thing, the fine print under the current $10 off deal specifically excludes Visa or M/C egift cards…. no? (Do your have reason or dps to think the $10 off deal would work for them?)
Never mind the fine print… just applied the code to an on-line order for 2×100 — and it applied with no problem. 🙂
