I’m not sure how long this has been available on their website, but I noticed overnight that Home Depot now sells third party gift cards online.
They’ve always had third party gift card racks in-store, but its interesting to see that they’re now selling them online too. There’s a few reasons why this is notable.
One is that they have some high value brands on there like Disney and Delta. Another reason is that it looks like Home Depot processes payment for gift card purchases themselves.
Both of those factors are worth bearing in mind because there’s currently a Home Depot Amex Offer giving $15 back when spending $150. I suspect the statement credit from that offer will be triggered by a gift card purchase online, but unfortunately I’m not able to verify that at the moment. I tried buying a gift card tonight using the credit card I have that Amex Offer loaded to, but for some reason the payment kept getting declined or rejected.
Another reason this feature is interesting is because it might be possible to earn cashback/rewards through a shopping portal. Seeing as this seems to be a relatively new feature, there’s a better chance of this tracking and paying out on gift card purchases than other companies that have had something similar in place for years, but there’s no guarantee it’ll work. Still, it’s always worth clicking through from a portal just in case.
If you end up testing this out with the Amex Offer, please let us know in the comments if a third party gift card purchase does indeed trigger the statement credit. Update: T.Y has confirmed in the comments that they bought a Delta gift card and it did trigger the Amex Offer email – woohoo!
Bought $150 Delta GC. Triggered Amex Offer.
Excellent, thank you for confirming that.
I bought a Disney gift card and it triggered the offer
