This is probably common knowledge for those of you who buy gift cards regularly from Rite Aid, but I had no clue until a reader reached out today to let me know – you can earn Rite Aid status when buying gift cards.
Rite Aid runs a loyalty program called Wellness+ Rewards. Part of this program offers BonusCash which is earned when buying certain products which rotate each week. Most weeks this includes select gift card brands, such as ‘Buy $50 Hotels.com gift card & get $10 BonusCash free’. The BonusCash can only be redeemed on certain items in-store; gift cards, prescriptions, alcohol, etc. are all excluded, but there can be some good value options when they run sales on other products.
Another component to the Wellness+ Rewards program is that you can earn Wellness+ tier points which in turn offers you status. There are three levels of status as you can see above – Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze is the entry-level status, while Silver and Gold statuses are earned when collecting the following number of tier points:
As you can see, Silver status requires 250 tier points, while Gold status requires 500 points. Those in turn offer discounts of 10% or 20% respectively on eligible, in-store purchases. 20% off is a pretty good discount, especially if the prices on those products are fairly comparable to elsewhere.
What I hadn’t known until now is that gift card purchases apparently earn tier points. That means buying $500 worth of gift cards should earn you Gold status which is a nice and easy way to achieve that tier.

This may not be accurate (or may no longer be true). I bought a few 3rd-party GCs a few days ago at my local RiteAid, and no tier points for those purchases.
Perhaps it only works on cards that have an active rewards points bonus promo? I haven’t tested that scenario.
Have you yourself successfully earned tier points for 3rd party GC purchases?
I haven’t bought gift cards from Rite Aid in a while. Your theory about only cards on promotion working might well be true – let us know if you test that out.
