Over the holidays Giant Eagle added a couple of new redemption options which initially seemed like they’d be temporary. However, with the upcoming changes to the myPerks program on January 25, 2024 those additional redemption options are here to stay which enhances the program and makes it more like the old fuelperks+ program.
When Giant Eagle launched the myPerks program a couple of years ago, there was only one type of redemption option – you could redeem 50 Perks for $1 off gas or groceries. For some people that would be beneficial as it meant you knew you’d always get a fixed value when using your Perks. However, it eliminated the possibility to get outsized value.
From January 25, 2024 there’ll be two additional redemption options which are a throwback to fuelperks+, so Giant Eagle presumably had a lot of feedback from unhappy customers and decided to add these redemption options:
- Redeem 100 Perks to get 10c off per gallon on up to 30 gallons, with the ability to redeem multiples of 100 Perks at a time
- Redeem 150 Perks to get 2% off your grocery bill, with the ability to redeem up to 1,500 Perks at a time for a total discount of 20%
To give you an idea as to how much these different redemption options can save you, let’s imagine that you have 300 Perks. Here’s what your savings could be:
50 Perks for $1 off gas or groceries
300 Perks would get you $6 off.
10c savings on gas
300 Perks could get you 30c off per gallon on up to 30 gallons. If you fill up with 10 gallons you’d save $3, 20 gallons would save you $6, while 30 gallons would save you $9.
2% savings on groceries
300 Perks would get you 4% off your grocery bill. Here’s how much you’d save based on different grocery totals:
- $50 spend = $2 off
- $100 spend = $4 off
- $150 spend = $6 off
- $200 spend = $8 off
- $250 spend = $10 off
Best Option
The best option for you will depend on how large your gas tank is and/or how much you’ll be spending on groceries. Redeeming 50 Perks for $1 of savings is the better option if your gas tank is smaller than 20 gallons or if you’d be spending less than $150 on groceries. If you have a larger gas tank or will be doing a large grocery shop, one of those options will be better.
The nice thing is that there’s no rush to redeem the points as they’re valid for 365 days. For some people it’ll make sense to save up your points later in the year so that you can maximize the value on a huge grocery shop before Thanksgiving or on a shopping cart including gifts before Christmas.
Either way, it’s great to see Giant Eagle make these positive changes. Let us know if there are any hidden negative changes in other ways with what they’ve announced, but if you rack up Perks through gift card purchases, these changes should be a positive thing as it could make those deals more profitable, or at the very least break even where they weren’t before.
