Giant Eagle is running a 5x Perks deal on all third party gift cards (other than Amazon) from November 24-27. That’s worth 10% back towards groceries or gas in the new program which is a pretty good deal considering other high value brands like Best Buy, Home Depot, Nike, Disney and eBay will be eligible.
It looks like this holiday period you can potentially do even better than 10% back though. That’s because for the holidays they’ve added a couple of new Perks redemption options:
- Redeem 100 Perks for 10c off per gallon which can be stacked for free gas on up to 30 gallons
- Redeem 150 Perks for 2% off your groceries with a limit of 1,500 Perks redeemed for 20% off your groceries
To give you an idea of how good these options could be, let’s say you bought a $300 gift card during the 5x promo period. You’d earn 1,500 Perks which ordinarily could be redeemed for $30 off gas or groceries which is a 10% return. Not bad, but these new options let you do better.
With the first gas option listed above, 1,500 Perks could be redeemed for $1.50 off per gallon on up to 30 gallons. If your vehicle takes more than 20 gallons of gas, you’ll come out ahead versus redeeming 50 Perks per $1 off. If you can max out with the 30 gallon limit, you’d be saving $45 – a 15% return on what you spent on the gift card.
Alternatively, you could redeem 1,500 Perks for 20% off your grocery shop. If you spend more than $150 on groceries, you’ll come out ahead versus the standard redemption option. If you decided to stock up on items and spent $300 there, you’d be saving $60 which represents a 20% return on the amount spent on the gift card which is an excellent return.
I really appreciate the post on this new benefit. Any idea on how long this option will exist? Also, I’m not waiting for the Target gift card promotion and instead will buy some Target gift cards with the current Giant Eagle promotion.
I didn’t see an end date listed I’m afraid. The section on their site is headed “New ways to redeem your Perks for the holidays” which makes me think it’s temporary, so possibly only until the end of the year or perhaps December 25.
