Reader EW sent in a tip tonight which has the potential to be useful if you ever take advantage of Chase Offers, although I can’t tell if it actually does anything different to how things are already set up.
The tip he sent in is that the Chase app allows you to set up notifications so that you get alerted when you use a Chase Offer. Here’s how to do that:
- Select Profile (the person icon in the top right corner)
- Manage Alerts
- Select Account
- Balance & Spending Alerts
- Alert me when a Chase Offer is used
- Select email and/or app notification
I went into the Chase app tonight and sure enough, those settings are there. I therefore turned on notifications for each of my Chase accounts, but there seems to be an issue. Despite turning on email notifications for each of my accounts, when logging back into the app about 15 minutes later, notifications were showing as being turned off – it hadn’t saved any of the changes I’d made.
This functionality is a little strange in another way. I’ve gotten emails in the past after redeeming Chase Offers, so it’s weird that notifications where shown as being turned off because Chase has sent them through anyway.
I was curious if these notifications worked a little differently though. The Chase Offers notifications that I’d received in the past were sent once the statement credit hit my account. Perhaps the settings in the Chase app are different – maybe they send you an email and/or app notification as soon as you make a payment on a card that has an eligible Chase Offer loaded to it, similar to how Amex will sometimes send you a confirmation email as soon as you redeem an Amex Offer.
I decided to test this out, but ballsed up the test. I wanted to make a purchase that would process straight away, would be low cost and would be an offer that I’d get some kind of use out of. There’s a targeted Starbucks Chase Offer giving 10% back and that was on one of our cards, so I bought a $5 Starbucks gift card in the Starbucks app using that card.
I didn’t get a notification and so assumed an email or notification would only be sent once the statement credit hit. However, I then realized that I’d paid with my wife’s Freedom Flex card which I hadn’t turned on notifications for – I’d only done that for my own cards which didn’t have the Starbucks Chase Offer loaded to it. Not that it seemingly would’ve mattered anyway seeing as the Chase app ended up not saving the notification changes I’d made, but the Starbucks Chase Offer is a one-time per card deal, so I can’t now turn on notifications for my wife’s card to test that out.
Anyway, this has the potential to be a useful development if it means you get immediate notification when you redeem a Chase Offer and the app actually saves your notification specifications.
Can confirm this works, thanks!
