After discovering the other day that Sheetz sells gift cards and has a rewards program, I decided to try testing things out. I didn’t have much success, but thought my experience could help if you’re planning on buying gift cards from Sheetz yourself.
Test 1 – Buying $20 Google Play Gift Card
Sheetz is currently offering 300 bonus Rewardz Pointz when buying a $20 gaming gift card for a number of brands. My wife was out of diamonds in her Home Design game, so I thought I could earn some brownie points (is that a phrase Americans use, or just us Brits?) by buying her a Google Play gift card.
Doing that at Sheetz meant I’d definitely earn 300 bonus Pointz, but I was curious if they earn base points too. Unfortunately I failed in this attempt. When checking out, the cashier asked for my Sheetz Rewardz card so she could scan it. I asked if I could enter my phone number, but apparently that’s not possible.
I’d set up my Sheetz Rewardz account online the night before and so didn’t have a physical card. When logging in to the Sheetz website on my phone, I didn’t see a barcode I could scan either, so I didn’t earn any Pointz whatsoever.
For future reference though, you can get the barcode up on your phone when on the Sheetz website. Log in to your account, then tap ‘My Cards’, then ‘View Barcode’ beneath where it says ‘My Sheetz Card’.
Test 2 – Buying Visa Gift Card
Sheetz also sells variable load Vanilla Visa gift cards with a $4.95 activation fee. I tried buying one at the same time as the Google Play gift card and a pack of Hostess Cupcakes (further brownie points).
When paying for them, I inserted my card and it took payment for $21.94, leaving $504.95 remaining. It therefore seems like Sheetz has hard coded their registers to only accept cash payment for Visa gift cards. The cashier hadn’t done anything special as she was confused as to why it hadn’t taken full payment, so she ended up having to cancel the entire transaction and then rang up the Google Play gift card and snack by themselves.

So for now, it was a fail on both points. It might be possible to pay for Visa gift cards at Sheetz with a debit card, but even if you’re earning 2% on a PayPal Business Debit Mastercard it likely won’t be worth the effort.
You do earn the 5 Points for Every $1 you spent on Gift Cards (not sure on VISA) as well. It even stacks with the Bonus Points Offers that they run. So your $20 Google Play Card Purchase would earn 400 points (100 base points, 300 point bonus offer). You also can customize your reward options in the Sheetz App. I usually buy Amazon Cards at Sheetz, but is there a better option than Sheetz and Best Buy (I don’t use fuel points, but grocery rewards). In WV there aren’t a ton of options.
Thanks for sharing more about how the program works. If you have a card that earns more at office supply stores or grocery stores, that can be another good option.
