Tips & Ideas
This is a phenomenal deal. I’d seen it one some of our cards this morning but ignored it because Belk gift cards can be bought for a large discount from Raise any day of the week.
What I hadn’t realized until receiving an email from a reader is that Belk has a third party gift card rack and it’s not just any old gift card rack. The selection might vary by store, but the rack in his store has variable load Visa and Mastercard gift cards, as well as gift cards for high value brands like Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, eBay, Shell, Google Play and many more.
What makes this deal particularly great is that there’s a limit of $250 in total statement credits. That means it’s good on up to $4,166.67 spend which is an amazingly high limit, albeit probably not the usage Amex or Belk were intending for with this offer! You could buy eight $500 Visa gift cards; the $5.95 purchase fees mean you’d pay $47.60 in fees, but you’d get back $242.86 in total statement credits for a net profit of $195.26 before liquidation fees. Not too shabby!
It gets even better though. You can link your Amex card(s) to an RCLON-backed (Rakuten Card Linked Offer Network) program for in-store purchases. That includes Rakuten, Alaska Airlines shopping portal, United shopping portal and Google Pay. Seeing as it uses the same tracking network, you can only earn with one of those programs. Gift card purchases are excluded, but that’s not always enforced. At the time of writing this post, you can also earn bonus miles when hitting spending thresholds with the United and Alaska Airlines shopping portals, so that could affect the math as to which card-linked program is best for you.

I noticed that Belk has 4%/4x back on Rakuten online and in store today. Pairs nicely with this Amex offer.
I am seeing another round of these offers on both mine and P2 cards with expiration of 12/31.
Thanks! I saw this offer on my cards last night too and it hadn’t occurred to me it was a new offer.
No problem. If you and the frequent miler crew do another “best deals of the year” for 2022 then this one has to be a contender. Stacking 12-15x MR through Rakuten, 6% cash back plus regular card earning rates at a retailer that has a pretty robust GC rack was one of the most lucrative deals for me this year. Assuming the earned MR points actually do pay out.
