As far as I’m aware, the expiry date of an Amex Offer has always been a hard and fast rule – the end date listed is always the end date.
That’s not always been the case for Chase Offers as those are sometimes extended multiple times, although there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which Chase Offers get extended and for how long.
It looks like Amex Offers might be joining Chase Offers in sometimes getting extended. Larry commented on the post about the California Pizza Kitchen Amex Offer which was due to end tonight, stating that it had been extended on his account to June 21.
I checked my account and sure enough – the expiry date has been extended. Here are the before and after screenshots:
This isn’t a brand new CPK Amex Offer either. I’d loaded it to one of my cards when it first came out on the off-chance that we ended up using it. The extended date was on the offer that had been loaded, so it’s definitely not a new offer with the same terms but a different expiry date.
I suspect that this isn’t going to be a common occurrence with Amex Offers though. Most of them can be used online in addition to in-store, so people can still take advantage of them despite the pandemic. This CPK offer is a little different though because of a couple of specific terms:
Offer valid in-restaurant and on orders placed online but paid for in-restaurant at participating locations in the US.
Excludes all orders paid for online or through the merchant’s app.
For whatever reason, online and app order payments don’t seem to be processed in a way that would trigger the offer. That makes it much harder to redeem the offer because it can only be redeemed in-restaurant and their restaurants are closed right now.
It’ll be interesting to see though if other Amex Offers get extended due to the pandemic though for similar reasons. If you notice this happening in the future, please give me a heads up in the comments of the Amex Offer post or using the contact page.
