When asking recently which gift card-related resources you’d like to see created on this site, Kent asked for a resource that collected data points on which sites and apps that sell gift cards allow you to pay with Visa and Mastercard gift cards or other types of prepaid card.
There are a couple of main reasons why paying with a Visa or Mastercard gift card could be useful. First, it can help you liquidate cards that you’ve purchased during a promotion such as when Staples offers fee-free $200 Visa gift cards or Office Depot gives you a $15 instant discount when buying $300+ Visa gift cards.
Second, it can make purchases of third party gift cards from some sites more rewarding. In the past, Gyft earned 5x/5% on the Chase Ink Plus/Ink Cash cards when paying with one of those cards and checking out using PayPal. That ended some time ago, so other than (maybe) cards that offer bonused spend for online shopping, most people probably aren’t getting a great return from whatever card they’re using for Gyft purchases. Paying for third party gift cards from Gyft using a Visa or Mastercard gift card bought from an office supply store using a Chase Ink Plus or Ink Cash card means you’re indirectly still getting 5x/5% on Gyft purchases.
That being said, I rarely – if ever – go that route and so I don’t have many data points to add myself other than the fact that Amazon can be a useful way to drain Visa or Mastercard gift cards with a small balance because you can reload your Amazon gift card balance from $0.50.
This is where you come in. If you happen to know which sites let you pay with Visa or Mastercard gift cards, please let us know in the comments below. If possible, please could you also share what type of card (e.g physical or virtual, Visa or Mastercard) as well as the bank that issues the card (e.g. MetaBank, US Bank, etc.) as those factors could affect the results.
I’ve started a list of some of the main retailers and apps, but please also share data points for other sites and apps which aren’t listed below.

Here are some DPs from me. One main workaround is using GCs through Paypal.
Best Buy (cashstar):
Metabank VGC: no. VGC via Paypal: yes.
eGifter:
Metabank VGC via Paypal: yes.
MyGiftCardsPlus:
Metabank VGC: no. VGC via Paypal: yes.
Thanks for those data points – I’ll add those in. Have you ever had any issues from PayPal with adding and deleting many different VGCs? I’ve tried to stay away from doing that out of an abundance of caution, but if you’ve done it frequently without any issues then it’d be nice to have an additional way of liquidating them.
I’ve done about 20 through Paypal without problem so far. I only started after lockdown started since I had a stash that I had acquired before lockdowns with no current easy liquidation methods.
Giant Eagle Online
Metabank VGC via Paypal: Yes.
Mastercard via Paypal: Yes.
I’ve never had any issue using them to buy other gift cards. In my experience, they limit one transaction per day depending on the amount of your Visa/Mastercard GC.
Example: If you have a $100 VC gc, you can buy various third party gc totaling $100.
Once I receive my purchase (s), I delete the used Visa/Mastercard GC.from PayPal without issue and I do this frequently.
Physical Visa/Master gc.
And I buy physical GC from Giant Eagle
Paypal hasn’t been an option for Giant Eagle for a while now. Not sure when it stopped.
Thanks for the data points – I’ve added those in. And thanks for sharing about your experience using them with PayPal.
Kent is CORRECT! I just logged into Giant Eagle “Gift Card Gallery” and the option to use PayPal is GONE! Ugh!
Sorry about that Stephen, looks like you’ll need to delete Giant Eagle from the list!
If it comes back I’ll let you know as this is how I buy Universal GC.
Will do – thanks!
Fluz accepts Virtual Visa gift cards from Swagbucks (via https://www.prepaiddigitalsolutions.com/)
Thanks – I’ll add that DP.
Aren’t these the same card Fluz issues? Perpetual cycling?
Kroger(online): yes
Only tried virtual visa gc
Target: yes
So far any virtual/electronic visa/master gc I tried worked
Walmart(online): yes
Only tried virtual visa gc
Thank you – I’ll add those DPs to the list.
I don’t know if it’s such a great idea to compile this kind of info for the general public and other relevant parties to see….
I’d wondered about that, but with things like the Doctor of Credit Payments Workshop and Frequent Miler Lab out there, I figured this kind of resource would be fairly small fry.
I understand your concern however, there are a number of sites who do the same specifically for Disney vacations. My main interest is Universal Orlando as they are not sold in our state.
Dumb question of the day, what does TBC mean? 🙂
To Be Confirmed
Metabank physica visa gift cards also work at Fluz and Target
Thanks – I’ve added those DPs.
