Update 1/28/19: Based on a comment on Frequent Miler, affected accounts are now seeing the following message:
Thank you for reaching out to support. Within the last 24 hours, an operational error resulted in a temporary loss of account access for a small number of customers. All impacted accounts have since been restored, so we are resolving your inquiry. If your issue was unrelated to account access, please feel free to respond and we would be happy to help further.
Reliable access is at the heart of our platform, and we regret any inconvenience caused by this interruption.

Uber appears to be trying to push loyal customers into the arms of Lyft by suspending accounts that have had gift cards redeemed to them. This appears to be a widespread issue, with customers being asked to confirm the gift card number(s) redeemed to their account. This seems like a pretty strange request seeing as you’d have needed the number in order to apply it to an account originally which proves you once had it, while many people will have thrown physical gift cards in the trash after redeeming them.
This is affecting customers who’ve redeemed as little as $25 in gift cards, so it’s not like they’re even targeting people that they could conceivably believe to have redeemed large numbers of gift cards bought fraudulently.
I can’t imagine this issue will last too long, but in the meantime I’d avoid buying Uber gift cards whether that’s for personal use or reselling.

[…] The recent issue with Uber gift cards seems to be resolved, so it should be fine loading these to your account again. […]
