In theory, this could be a good deal. These Mastercard gift cards usually have a $6.95 activation fee, so having that fee waived is decent. It can be made even better by paying with a card that earns more at office supply stores.
There’s a huge caveat though. Well, two. First, these cards don’t come pre-activated. Staples will send activation codes in the mail, but they can take a while to arrive. Second, people have reported fraud issues on Mastercard gift cards before, so that’s an additional concern.
