Update 11/9/19: As per EW’s comment below, step 2 is no longer available and Dosh is reduced to $10. As of right now, TopCashback is offering 17% cashback on new Sam’s Club memberships, although that’ll likely end today. This is helpful if you’re wanting to take advantage of their one day sale which includes iTunes gift cards and other Extreme Value gift cards.
Update 9/18/19: It’s now possible to make a profit – see below for more.
~
There’s a new Sam’s Club Amex Offer that’s offering $25 back when buying a $45 membership. You can stack this with some other deals to get an almost free membership, or one that’s actually free depending on how you value a rotisserie chicken a profitable membership.
Sam’s Club often runs gift card deals, so this can be useful for taking advantage of those, especially heading in to the holiday season.
Step 1 – Amex Offer – $25
This Amex Offer gives a $25 statement credit when paying for a $45 Sam’s Club membership. There might be a 2,500 Membership Rewards version, but my wife and I only had the $25 statement credit version on our cards.
It’s showing up on Amex Connect, so it should be possible to add it to whatever card you want.
Step 2 – $20 Gift Card & $30 Savings – $50
Enter your email address here. Sam’s Club will send you an email with the promo code you need to redeem to get the $20 gift card and have $30 in savings loaded to your new membership. Don’t click the link in that email though; instead, do the next step.
Step 3 – Portal Cashback – $6.75
At the time of writing this post, BeFrugal is offering 15% cashback on Sam’s Club memberships. Based on the $45 cost, that’s $6.75 cashback.
TopCashback has gone higher than that for memberships in the past, so check all the latest portal rates if you’re not planning on taking advantage of this deal immediately.
Once you’ve clicked through from a portal, copy and paste the link in the email that Sam’s Club sent you from Step 2.
Step 4 – Sam’s Club Gift Card Deal – $10
Ignore this step as the $50 deal listed above is better and I don’t think the two will stack.
Sam’s Club is offering a $10 Sam’s Club eGift card when joining, along with coupons for free or discounted products, including a free rotisserie chicken.
What you need to do is click through to Sam’s Club from BeFrugal (or whatever portal is offering the best rate on memberships when you want to get one), then copy and paste this link. That should ensure that the portal cashback still tracks.
Similar to the Amex Offer, the $10 eGift card + coupons membership deal is around until January 31, 2020.
Step 4 – Bumped – $0.45
I’m not sure if this will work, but the Bumped app has Sam’s Club as one of its options, paying 1% in a Vanguard ETF. The reason I’m not certain it’ll work is because you’re paying for this online, while the Bumped app might only work for in-store purchases. If it tracks though, that’s a bonus.
Here’s a referral link if you want to join Bumped (a card-linked app), although be aware that there’s a waitlist. I don’t think there’s a monetary incentive for either side of the referral, although the person doing the referring gets earlier access the more people they refer. I’m already in, so that’s my wife’s referral link as she doesn’t have access yet, so hopefully this’ll get her in more quickly.
Step 5 – Dosh – $20
When originally writing this post, Dosh was no longer offering cashback for a new Sam’s Club membership. They sent out emails on September 18 though advising that it was back in the app. You can earn 5% on in-store purchases and $20 when taking out a new membership.
You’ll need to add the Amex card with the Sam’s Club Amex Offer loaded to it in the Dosh app. If you’re new to Dosh, here’s my referral link. I think we both get a $5 bonus when you sign up and link your first card.
Potential Stacking In The Future
It used to be possible to get a profitable Sam’s Club membership as there were additional stacking opportunities. The Dosh app used to pay out for memberships, while Acorns also offered $10 in Found Money.
Neither of those seem to be available at the moment, but keep an eye out in case they return.
The Math
I’m British, so it still pains me a little to write ‘The Math’, so I also feel the need to write ‘The Maths’ as that’s how it’s supposed to be said 😉
Anyway, here’s how it all adds up:
- $45 Sam’s Club membership
- -$25 from Amex Offer
- -$50 from the $20 gift card and $30 in savings
- -$6.75 from BeFrugal
- -$20 from Dosh
- Profit of $56.75
If you have the Bumped app and it tracks, that increases the profit to $57.20. If you value the rotisserie chicken at ~$3, this is a break even deal for a Sam’s Club membership.
Other Stacking Opportunities?
Those are all the stacking opportunities I can think of, but are there others? If so, please let me know in the comments below.

The Step 2 offer expired 11/3/19 and the current DOSH cash back is $10.
Thanks for the heads up – I’ve updated the start of the post.
