Tips & Ideas
I’m not too familiar with how Speedway deals work, but here’s how I think this works. Please let me know in the comments below if any of this is wrong or if there are ways to maximize or stack one or both of these deals.
The most interesting of these deals will be the one offering 300 bonus points for every $25 spent on any gift cards. This includes Best Buy, Amazon and Visa gift cards, so it’s a deal that’s worth considering.
Let’s say you buy $1,000 worth of gift cards (this makes the math a little easier when it comes to redeeming the points). Seeing as you earn 300 bonus points for every $25 spent, you’d earn 12,000 bonus points. You also earn 20 base points per dollar, so that’s another 20,000 points which gives you a total of 32,000 points.
You can redeem 30,000 points for a $25 gift card (e.g. Amazon or Best Buy), meaning you’d have 2,000 points leftover. Alternatively, you can redeem 26,000 points for a $25 Speedy Cash gift card and 5,500 points for a $5 Speedy Cash gift card; that’s $30 worth of gas and you’d have 500 points leftover.
Those options are therefore worth ~2.5-3% which isn’t amazing, but could be made better by paying with a credit card that earns more at gas stations (assuming that in-store Speedway transactions code as a gas station).
One thing I forgot to check when I was in the Speedway store earlier was if they stocked variable load Visa gift cards or only fixed value. If you can buy $500 cards, that’ll likely be the more profitable play here even after accounting for the activation and liquidation fees.
Like I said earlier though, please let me and other readers know if there’s something (or several things!) I’m missing. One thing I’d be interested to know is how quickly the points credit to your account. I’ll be near Speedway gas stations for the next week or so but I don’t think I will be beyond that. If it takes a couple of weeks for the points to clear, it won’t be worth me taking advantage of this deal.
I doubt this would work, but can you buy gift cards with Speedy Cash seeing as it can be used for merchandise? If you can, I’m assuming you could double dip the offers by earning 500 points per $25 of Speedy Cash, then using that card to buy gift cards to earn an additional 300 points per $25.
Thank you for those tips – that’s really helpful!
