Rakuten offered triple cashback on in-store purchases recently. They’re now offering 10% 15%at a wide range of stores including some in-store offers. If your Rakuten account is set up to earn Membership Rewards, you’ll earn 10x 15x which is even better if you value Membership Rewards at greater than 1 cent per point.

The way this works is that you add your credit card(s) to your Rakuten account and link offers to your card(s). You then buy stuff in-store at a linked retailer and Rakuten will track the purchase and offer cashback.

Before going on to the next stage, there’s something important to note: the terms exclude gift card purchases. Rakuten (formerly Ebates) has been known to claw back cashback earned from gift card purchases in the past, although the data points I’d heard of related to gift card purchases at Staples or Office Depot/OfficeMax back in the day.

Anyway, here’s why this up-to 10% 15x rate could be interesting. When looking through the list of eligible in-store retailers, there are several retailers where there are current Amex Offers available. If Rakuten tracks gift card purchases in-store and pays out without clawing back, some of these could be very nice bonuses on top of the statement credits/bonus Membership Rewards points you’ll earn from the Amex Offers.
