Navy Federal Credit Union has apparently decided that they don’t want to participate in the games we play by no longer offering rewards when buying gift cards online from a wide range of retailers.
That includes sites where payment is processed by Blackhawk Network and thus affects the online gift card offerings for Kroger, Harris Teeter, USPS, Giant Eagle, Meijer, Tops, Price Chopper, etc.
Other popular online gift card buying sites such as eGifter, MyGiftCardsPlus and Simon Mall are also excluded, so be sure to pay with a non-NFCU card.
It’s strange that NFCU is taking such a hard line on these purchases. Although Amex doesn’t offer rewards when buying gift cards from Simon Mall online or in-store, that’s the extent of their stinginess. To not offer rewards for someone buying a $50 eGift card as a gift for someone from one of these excluded retailers seems ridiculous, even if the purpose of this is for them to prevent heavy hitters from using their credit cards to buy gift cards.
