Tips & Ideas
This is a sweet deal as the $100 in total statement credits means this is good on up to $1,000 of spend. Lowe’s stores have an excellent range of gift cards on their rack, including Visa, Mastercard, Amazon and Best Buy.
I’ve also noticed that they tend to carry grocery store gift cards like Kroger, Giant, etc., depending on which stores are in your area. This Lowe’s Amex Offer can therefore be used to buy gift cards to save 10% off your groceries or gas at those stores.
Otherwise, buying a couple of $500 Visa or Mastercard gift cards will give you more than $85 profit even after accounting for liquidation costs.
Update: Nick at FM made a good point that Lowe’s has velocity limits, so you don’t want to get $1,000 of the same type of gift card in the same transaction or even within a few minutes of each other. I made that mistake last year where my card got charged but the gift card wasn’t activated. I was able to get it resolved, but it was a bit of a hassle and I had to do a chargeback on my credit card.
Also, I went to a Lowe’s store this afternoon and they didn’t have any $500 Visa or Mastercard gift cards, nor $500 Amazon gift cards – the maximum was $200. I’m not sure if that’s location/store-specific, or if all Lowe’s stores have those restrictions now. It’s less of an issue for Amazon as you can still max that out with five cards, but it means you’d be paying much more in activation fees for Visa and Mastercard gift cards.
I’d thought it was targeted at business cards, but apparently some people are seeing the offer on some personal cards too.
