Tips & Ideas
A 4x fuel points deal on all third party gift cards ended fairly recently at Kroger. While it’s nice that a new one is just starting, it’s a shame that it’s only good on Happy and Giving gift cards and the handful of other Happy-esque cards.
Still, with potential gas savings of up to 14%, it can be a good deal for people who are able to make good use of the fuel points and can convert the Happy gift cards easily, especially now that many Happy and Giving Good brands can be redeemed for other gift cards online.
Note that when loading the digital coupon to your account, it only mentions Happy gift cards as being eligible. However, when checking the list of eligible brands online here, Giving Good, Thanks Teacher, The Choice and Holiday Favorites gift cards are also listed as being eligible. I therefore suspect that those same brands will earn 4x fuel points when buying them in-store too. However, it would be worth making a small test purchase of one of those non-Happy brands before spending hundreds of bucks on them just to ensure they do indeed earn 4x.
Pay with one of the many cards earning more at grocery stores to make this an even better deal.

I’m trying to do the math to see how this deal makes economic sense.
Say you buy a $100 gc, so that ends up being 400 fuel points.
At Kroger, 100 fuel points = 10 cents off per gallon.
So that’s $0.40 off per gallon.
Suppose you have a near-empty sedan, that has fifteen gallons. That ends up being $6 in gas savings ($0.40 * 15 gallons).
So $6 return for a $100 purchase is roughly the same as 6% off.
That doesn’t seem to be better than even the standard 10% off gc deals out there.
Yep, if your car only takes 15 gallons it’s likely not worth it. You can redeem fuel points on up to 35 gallons, so if you can max that out then you’re saving 14% which makes it more worthwhile.
While any people won’t have a vehicle that takes 35 gallons, if you have two vehicles that take 35 gallons combined, you could fill them at the same time to maximize the fuel points.
