These $25, $50 and $100 Visa and Mastercard gift cards have fairly high activation fees compared to their value. Despite that, this has the potential to be a profitable deal if you can fill up your vehicle(s) to take advantage of the 35 gallon limit when using fuel points.
For example, I think the $100 cards have a $5.95 activation fee. If you bought two of those, it’d cost you $11.90 in fees and you’d earn 848 fuel points. I’ll also assume you spend $2 on something else to round that up to 850 fuel points.
850 fuel points can save you 85c per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If you were able to fill up to that full 35 gallon limit, you’d be saving $29.75, far outweighing the $11.90 in activation fees. In fact, filling up with 14 gallons would make this a break-even deal, so anything in excess of that you’d be coming out ahead. That’s even before taking into account any additional credit card rewards you can earn from grocery store purchases.
