Blackhawk Network has made a bunch of changes to its multi-store gift cards. They’ve launched new Choice and Giving Good brands, seemingly retired a Happy brand and changed retailers on a couple of Giving Good brands. Here’s a roundup of all the changes.
New Brands
First up, there are four new brands – three Choice cards and one Giving Good.
Choice Thank You Gift Card
The first new brand is a Choice one called Thank You. The eligible retailers/restaurants on this card are:
- Old Navy
- Ulta Beauty
- Applebee’s
- Chevron/Texaco
- Regal Cinemas
- Grubhub
- Total Wine
Depending on how good future deals on Choice cards are, there might be one or two brands on here that’ll be useful for resellers. The inclusion of Chevron/Texaco could also be good for personal use to save money on gas.
Choice Oh Baby! Gift Card
The second new brand is, in theory, focused on parents of newborn babies as these are the eligible retailers:
- Baby Gap
- Nordstrom Rack
- Buy Buy Baby
- Carter’s
- Honest
In reality though, in many cases you’re not restricted to these retailers. You have to redeem the Oh Baby! card for gift cards for these retailers, but Baby Gap can be used at any of Gap’s brands, Buy Buy Baby gift cards can also be redeemed at Bed Bath & Beyond, Nordstrom Rack can be redeemed at Nordstrom, etc. Check out our full list of interchangeable gift card brands for more about that side of things.
Choice Yay You! Gift Cards
The third new Choice brand is Yay You! This brand can be redeemed for gift cards for the following retailers/restaurants:
- Dave & Buster’s
- AMC Theatres
- Bed Bath & Beyond
- BJ’s Restaurant
- Express
- Grubhub
- Athleta
The brands on this card could make it a good option for resellers if and when it goes on sale.
Giving Good American Cancer Society Gift Card
The other new brand is a Giving Good one. Giving Good gift cards have 3% of the purchase price donated to the charity on the card, with this new brand benefiting the American Cancer Society.
The eligible retailers/restaurants are:
- Under Armour
- Outback Steakhouse
- Macy’s
- Harry & David’s
- GameStop
- Ulta Beauty
This isn’t as good as the change on the Giving Good St Jude card (more about that in a moment), but it could be a good deal when discounts/extra rewards are offered when buying Giving Good gift cards.
Retired Brand
I’m not 100% sure about this change, but it looks like the Happy Lady brand has been retired. It’s been removed from sites like Giftcards.com, GiftCardMall and HappyCards.com, all of which are owned by Blackhawk Network and who are the ones who issue these multi-store cards.
This was one of the few remaining brands that could be redeemed in-store rather than having to exchange it online for gift cards for the eligible retailers/restaurants. That could be a loss for people who were able to buy Happy Lady gift cards at a discount and subsequently buy Visa gift cards or other high-value gift cards at Bed Bath & Beyond with the physical Happy Lady card.
Like I said though, I’m not 100% sure that this has been retired. Although it’s not available for purchase online from those aforementioned sites, it might still be available in stores. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it completely disappear though because Blackhawk Network seems to be gradually doing away with these physical cards in favor of cards that have to be redeemed for gift cards online.
Changing Brands
A couple of Giving Good gift card brands have had their eligible retailers/restaurants changed, with one being of particular interest.
Giving Good St Jude Children’s Research Hospital
The old version of the St Jude card could be redeemed for gift cards at the following places:
- Domino’s
- Claire’s
- Chili’s
- Build-A-Bear Workshop
- AutoZone
- Regal Cinemas
The new version can be redeemed at:
- Regal Cinemas
- Domino’s
- Chili’s
- IHOP
- AutoZone
- Best Buy
That means Claire’s and Build-A-Bear Workshop have been removed and in their place IHOP and Best Buy have been added – a pretty good exchange!
Giving Good Wounded Warrior Project
The other Giving Good card that has changed is the Wounded Warrior Project brand. Its previous retailers/restaurants were:
- GameStop
- Dave & Buster’s
- Regal Cinemas
- Lowe’s
- Buffalo Wild Wings
- AutoZone
- Fanatics
- Subway
- P.F. Chang’s
The new version of the card is exactly the same other than for the removal of P.F. Chang’s. This is therefore a minor change, but I wanted to point it out anyway just in case you liked saving on P.F. Chang’s by buying discounted Giving Good Wounded Warrior Project gift cards.
Getting rid of physical happy cards is very bad for the value proposition. So I don’t like that trend.
Hoping they add more physical redemption cards, particularly with Bed bath beyond, GameStop, and Best Buy.
Happy Student may also have been retired. It has disappeared from HappyCards.com, GiftCards.com (including the Kroger subdomain), GiftCardMall.com, and Amazon. In fact, there was a problem with Amazon’s most recent sale for Happy Student, as Amazon no longer had a product page for the card even though it was supposed to be on sale.
The Simon Mall and Staples subdomains for GiftCardMall still list Happy Student, but that may be an error.
