Tips & Ideas
A regular Sam’s Club membership normally costs $45, so getting one for $35 with $30 in gift cards is a pretty good deal. If you pay with a discounted Groupon gift card after clicking through from a shopping portal, that should make the membership break even or marginally profitable.
Sam’s Club membership deals are often only available on regular memberships, so it’s good to see Sam’s Club Plus memberships as an additional option. I’m not always a big fan of the freebies that come with these types of membership packages, but this time the eligible products all seem to be useful items that people will likely need to buy for themselves at some point. The fact that those come with a membership that offers 2% back on purchases is great.
The more expensive membership means you can save even more and earn more rewards. For example, let’s say you buy a Groupon gift card at a 10% discount through the Staples or Lowe’s Amex Offers – that gives you a net cost of $81. The Rakuten portal is also offering 12x/12% on Groupon purchases at the time of writing this post (here are the current rates for all portals). Seeing as those rewards/cashback are based on the full $90 purchase price, you’d earn 1,080 Membership Rewards or $10.80 cashback (depending on whether your Rakuten account is set up to earn Membership Rewards or cashback).
That means the Sam’s Club Plus membership option can cost you either $81 and earn you 1,080 Membership Rewards or only cost $70.20. Getting a membership that gives you 2% back on purchases, $25 in gift cards and up to $80 value in merchandise is a great deal.
One thing to note regarding the $20 eGift card you receive when spending $20 or more online. I did the last Groupon/Sam’s Club membership deal and placed an online order. I never received the eGift card and had to follow up with Sam’s Club by email numerous times which was a bit of a hassle, but I did eventually get the eGift card sent to me.
