Blackhawk Network owns Giftcards.com and they’ve launched a new (sort-of) multi-store gift card called the Giftcards.com gift card (our affiliate link).
As you can see on the image above, it says you can choose from 350+ brands. I was curious how it would work, so I bought one to test it out. You can buy the gift cards in any whole dollar amount from $25-$500. I assumed that I’d then have to go to redeem.giftcards.com in order to exchange it for an eligible brand, similar to how One4All, Choice, Happy and Giving Good gift cards work. However, that’s not the case.
Instead, when you receive the gift card via email you’ll be sent a link with the 19 digit card number and 4 digit PIN. You’ll then go back to the regular Giftcards.com website and place an order for a third party gift cards, selecting the ‘Giftcards.com Gift Card’ payment option when checking out rather than using a credit card. Note that this only works on third party gift cards – you apparently can’t redeem Giftcards.com gift cards for open loop (i.e. Visa and Mastercard) gift cards that have purchase fees.
These Giftcards.com gift cards can therefore be a great gifting option for special occasions as the recipient will be able to choose from a much larger range of gift card brands than normal multi-store cards. If you want to buy third party gift cards from Giftcards.com for personal use, it might seem like buying these Giftcards.com gift cards wouldn’t be worth it as it simply adds an extra few steps in the buying process rather than just buying the specific brand you’re interested in. However, it might make sense for some people to make two purchases from Giftcards.com rather than one, despite the extra effort, seeing as it’s a different redemption method to normal if you’re tracking this.
It’ll be interesting to see if you take the extra step when buying gift cards for personal use, if you’ll be able to benefit from double tracking in shopping portals.
I have a feeling they’ll treat this like a coupon that takes off $ from the balance, just so it wouldn’t double track on portals
Nice . Hope they will have promotions to buy these cards . So we can double dip
