Well, this is new. I’d always thought it was weird that GiftCards.com was available on most airline shopping portals but not GiftCardMall seeing as they’re both owned by Blackhawk Network.
I just noticed though that GiftCardMall has been added as an eligible retailer by the following airline shopping portals:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- United
- Southwest
Based on the history listed on Cashback Monitor, it looks like this started on May 18, 2021. For some reason Delta’s portal doesn’t have GiftCardMall, GiftCards.com or Raise available whereas all these other portals do. All these portals are run by Cartera, so I don’t know why Delta is the exception.
Having GiftCardMall available on all these airline portals is great news for a couple of reasons. For starters, it’s always good to have more options for earning cashback or miles at GiftCardMall. TopCashback tends to be the best option when buying Happy gift cards through GiftCardMall seeing as they offer 5% cashback, but for Visa and Mastercard gift card purchases it’s much of a muchness between portals as they all tend to offer only 1% cashback. With airline miles being worth more than 1cpp (depending on how you value them), that means you can get more than 1cpp of value provided they offer at least 1x. As things stand right now, the United portal is offering an increased rate of 3x which is a great return for GiftCardMall as it looks like Visa and Mastercard gift cards would be eligible for that rate, not just Happy gift cards.
A second reason it’s good news is that airline portals frequently run bonus mile promotions where if you spend $x you’ll earn y bonus miles. This gives you another option for taking advantage of those promotions by buying gift cards, especially seeing as GiftCardMall sometimes runs discounted gift card deals. If those promotions align, you can earn the portal bonus while simultaneously saving on gift cards.
it looks like it has disappeared again Stephen. Not sure when?…
Ah, that’s disappointing – thanks for letting me know.
