Tips & Ideas
I’m fairly new to the Fluz app as I first downloaded the app a few weeks ago. In case you’re not familiar with it, Fluz is an app where you can buy gift cards instantly and offers cashback for doing so. It works in a similar way to United’s MileagePlus X (MPX) app as you can purchase gift cards for random amounts, with the main difference being that you earn cashback rather than miles.
Being able to buy gift cards for random amounts can be particularly helpful to ensure you don’t end up with a dollar or two left on a gift card that ends up going unused and forgotten about. For example, let’s say you’re buying some stuff from Gap either in-store or online and your total comes to $47.63 including tax. You could buy a $50 gift card, but you’d then have $2.37 left over on it to keep track of. With Fluz (and MPX), you can buy a gift card for that specific amount and, at the time of writing this, also earn 7% cashback.
The gift card is delivered instantly which is particularly helpful if you’re in a store as it means you don’t have to wait minutes or hours for it to arrive like with PayPal Digital Gifts, eGift card purchases on Staples.com, etc.
Unlike many gift card retailers, Fluz is allowed to sell Amazon gift cards. They offer 0.5% cashback for Amazon gift cards as standard, but that amount sometimes increases. It’s currently increased to 1% and was 1.5% the other day. It’s often possible to get better discounts/rewards than that if you plan ahead or if you have a credit card that offers 5% on Amazon, but up to 1.5% is better than nothing for an impulse Amazon purchase.
Despite the fact that it offers cashback, the Fluz app isn’t always going to be your best choice for gift card purchases. For example, at the time of writing this you could buy a $50 Gap gift card for as low as $43.90 on Raise.
Using the earlier example, you’d be better off buying a $50 gift card for $43.90 from Raise and letting the remaining $2.37 go to waste than buying a $47.63 gift card from Fluz and earning 7% cashback as your net cost would be $44.30.
If you hate doing instant math while in a store though, Fluz is a convenient option.
Referral Program
When I signed up a few weeks ago, the Fluz referral program offered three vouchers worth 35% off gift cards of up to $10. That signup bonus was therefore worth $10.50, although those vouchers could only be used on a handful of gift card brands:
- Buffalo Wild Wings
- Burger King
- Chipotle
- CVS
- Domino’s
- Jamba Juice
- Papa John’s
- Peet’s Coffee
- Spotify
- Starbucks
- The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
From what I can tell, you get the $5 bonus in addition to the three 35% off vouchers, but I’m not absolutely certain about that. The email I received from Fluz only mentions the $5 bonus, but the referral section in the app states that anyone I refer receives the three vouchers, so I’m assuming you get both and the $5 is an added incentive rather than a replacement
If you are interested in signing up, here’s my referral link. If you use my link I’ll receive one voucher for 35% off one of those $10 gift cards. The email from Fluz suggests there are additional bonuses being offered to people referring others when they meet certain thresholds, but it doesn’t provide any detail as to what those thresholds are.
New members have to “complete account setup”. I’m not sure what constitutes account setup being “complete”, but I’m guessing you have to add at least one credit card as a payment option.
Update: Fluz has sent out a further email specifying what new members need to do in order to “complete account setup” to get the $5 bonus. The requirements aren’t particularly onerous, but they’re certainly not what you’d automatically expect to do and so I’m glad they’ve provided the clarification. If you sign up during this promotion period, here are the five steps you need to complete:
1) Missed Earnings – See how much money you could make with Fluz based on stores you already shop at.
I’m assuming this is part of the onboarding process when you initially sign up. If not, scroll down the home page beneath the ‘All Stores’ section and you should see a banner saying ‘Get Missed Earnings’.
Tap on that and then tap ‘Get Missed Earnings’ on the next page too. It’ll then prompt you to use Plaid to link to your bank or credit card.
2) Pick Five – Add five stores to your favorites list to complete.
If you didn’t do this during your initial account opening, the Favorites list is at the top of the home page.
3) Set Goal – Set your network goal and see the power of extended networks.
I’m not sure why they feel the need to make it sound like a pyramid scheme, but whatever. I’m not sure how to set your network goal – hopefully this is something you did when signing up.
4) Don’t Forget – Turn on nearby updates, so you never miss cash back at nearby stores.
I think this is something you can do in your phone settings rather than necessarily needing to do it in the Fluz app. On Android, it should be Settings > Apps & Notifications > See all apps > Fluz > Permissions > Allow all the time
5) Use Fluz – Use Fluz at any store for any amount.
This one is nice and straightforward. I’m assuming using one of your 35% off vouchers will be an eligible transaction for this final step.
[…] Fluz ran a promotion last month offering a $5 bonus for new users that performed certain actions in addition to three of these vouchers. It seems a bit of a bait and switch that they likely received a bunch of new users from that promotion, only to change the terms of the 35% discount vouchers those new users received shortly after that. I suspect that the promotion was more successful than they anticipated and they’re now looking to reduce the liabilities of people having several of these vouchers sitting in their accounts long term rather than being redeemed straight away. I only redeemed my first voucher the other day, so I guess I need to get a move on with the other half dozen sitting in my account. […]
