Update 3: It looks like this was just some kind of glitch as the offer is showing up again for people who hadn’t used it yet.
Update 2: Amex has changed the expiry date of this Amex Offer to today (October 14). If you hadn’t used it yet, there’s very little time to make use of it. I don’t know if this is a glitch on Amex’s side or if they had cold feet with how large the statement credit is on the Amex Offer, but either way it’s really crappy. h/t Matthew in the comments.
Update: Good news – I’ve received an email from Delta confirming that I’ve used the offer, so gift card purchases as explained below do still work 🙂

Tips & Ideas
Wow, this is a sweet deal if you’re targeted. Getting $125 back on $300 spend is a 41.67% discount. It’s even better if you get it on a personal Platinum card (it might actually be that particular card type that’s targeted for this offer) because you’ll also earn 5x Membership Rewards on the purchase.
Gift card purchases are excluded, but that’s not been enforced in the past provided you buy a Delta gift card in the correct way. Delta has three different places where you can buy their gift cards online – one on their website and two separate sites run by CashStar.
The two CashStar sites won’t trigger the statement credit from this Amex Offer because payment isn’t taken by Delta. Instead, you need to buy from the page linked to above. However, only buy a Delta gift card on desktop rather than mobile if you’re taking advantage of this Amex Offer. For some reason, purchases made on mobile devices from that landing page code differently than purchases made on desktop.
In the past, buying a Delta gift card on desktop has always worked to trigger the statement credit. I just bought a $300 Delta gift card but haven’t received a confirmation email from American Express that I’ve redeemed this Delta Amex Offer. I’m not overly worried as they don’t always send emails, but I’ll update this post in a few days if and when I get the statement credit. Update: I received the email from Amex a few hours later, so buying gift cards still seems to work.
Be sure to load this offer to one of your cards ASAP as I imagine enrollment will max out pretty quickly.
It says “flights must originate in the US”. Does that mean mainly that the transaction must be in USD or that it is for flights only? They’ve done flights only offers in the past.
I think it means it must be in USD – a gift card purchase worked, so although this says it’s for flights originating in the US, that’s not the only option for using it.
Have you done this offer in the past and has purchasing gift cards triggered this offer?
Does it need to be a physical gift card?
I purchased an e-card. I got the email but don’t know for sure that it worked.
I got the email stating that I have used my “enrolled offer”. “If your purchase meets all eligibility requirements of the offer terms, you’ll see your rewards reflected directly on your statement. Credits may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled.”
My question: Have you actually seen the statement credit come through or did you get this same email?
Hi, how long did you get the email after your purchase? Thanks.
BTW, if you get the email, it should be good to get the credit.
I got it immediately. I’m keeping fingers crossed that it goes through.
I didn’t get it, still waiting 🙁
same process lol
Stephen, did you purchase the eGift card or physical card? Or does it not matter?
Looks like they changed the expiration date to today despite having 12/31/21 as the expiration date earlier today..
Same here! so unfair
Indeed, I am curious if they plan on letting people know. I’m sure several people loaded it and planned to use it in the next couple months to just find out Amex changed their mind.
Looks like Amex changed expiry date to today.
Honestly – after the spate of Amex closures I wouldnt be suprised if this isnt the last we have heard of this esp if folks were buying GC in violation of T&C
I don’t see how buying a Delta gift card violates any terms. The buyer has nothing to do with whether Amex decides to issue cashback or whether their accounting is correct.
The offer is back on my and P2’s accounts.
w/ 12/31 expiration
Offer is back for me as well.
