Redeeming ThankYou points for gift cards doesn’t provide as good value as transferring points to travel partners. However, this does give you an opportunity to cash out your points for better than 1cpp which could be useful for anyone who doesn’t have a Premier or Prestige card and thus have limited transfer partner options/ratios.
Having said that, most of these brands can be bought at greater than 10% discounts from elsewhere, so for those you’d do better to redeem your ThankYou points for cashback at a 1cpp rate and buy the gift cards at a larger discount. The brand that could be an exception with this is Happy To Say Thanks seeing as that can be redeemed for gift cards for Lowe’s, Subway and Ulta Beauty. Depending on the resale rates available to you, that could get you better than 1cpp when reselling those cards.
