Chase offers a 10% discount on a different set of gift card brands each month. I’ve always advised against using Ultimate Rewards in this way as it’s always poor value and you could usually do better buying discounted gift cards with your Chase card and redeeming Ultimate Rewards as statement credits (n.b. that still isn’t the best use for them because transfer partners provide better value.)
This month is an exception though for two reasons. First, COVID-19 is taking a big bite into a lot of people’s income right now. Second, Chase is offering 10% off Safeway and Albertsons gift cards which is the first time I’ve noticed them offering that as an option. While it’s not ideal, that’s a decent redemption if your income has taken a hit or is about to. Having a large stash of Ultimate Rewards for a luxury Hyatt stay is nice, but having food on the table is nicer.
My regular advice still stands for the other brands on offer though – you can usually get discounts of ~10% or more on many of these brands, so no point redeeming Ultimate Rewards for those.
