Getting a 10% discount on gift cards for redeeming Ultimate Rewards is always a poor value, but it’s even worse right now if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Preferred card.

That’s because you can take advantage of the new Pay Yourself Back feature to buy gift cards at grocery stores for a 1.5cpp value on the Sapphire Reserve and 1.25cpp value on the Sapphire Preferred.

For example, buying a $100 gift card for one of the eligible brands at a 10% discount means you’d be redeeming 9,000 points. With Pay Yourself Back, you could buy a $135 gift card at the grocery store on the Sapphire Reserve or $112.50 gift card on the Sapphire Preferred for the same number of points.
