Tips & Ideas
This is a pretty sweet deal, although it looks like the $1,500 allowance is across the entire three months, rather than being $1,500 per month for a total allowance of $4,500 during the promotion period.
If you wouldn’t normally spend that much on gas over the summer, you might be able to buy gift cards from gas stations to max out the bonus points. Speedway sells brands like Best Buy and Amazon along with Visa gift cards. Speedway might be ending rewards for gift card purchases from July 1, so that’ll make it a little less rewarding if that does come to pass.
7-Eleven might also be an option for Visa gift cards, but you’ll want to make sure that in-store purchases code as gas first before going all-in. Not all 7-Eleven locations allow you to buy Visa gift cards with credit cards either – I was able to buy some in Tucson, AZ in March when the Chase Freedom card was offering 5% at gas stations, but struck out at a 7-Eleven in Pueblo, CO last month when trying to use up some of our Discover 5% spend in Q2 as they were cash-only.
Instacart purchases will earn 5x/3x on the Reserve/Preferred respectively, while you’ll also earn 10x/5x on streaming services respectively. I’m not aware of a gift card play for Instacart or streaming services, although Instacart’s website makes it look like you might be able to order gift cards from select stores like Rite Aid and ShopRite – I’ve no clue if that’s the case though as I’ve never used Instacart.
