Key Terms

  • During the “Holiday Bonus” offer, which runs from 11/1/2024 through 11/22/2024 at 11:59:59 pm ET (the “Bonus Period”), Member will earn a one-time bonus of up to 5,000 MileagePlus bonus award miles on qualifying purchases made through the MileagePlus Shopping mall or from purchases made through MileagePlus Shopping in-store offers.
  • This one-time bonus award will be based on Member’s cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period using one of the following tiers: Tier 1 bonus: 500 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $150; Tier 2 bonus: 2,000 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $600; or Tier 3 bonus: 5,000 miles for qualifying purchases of $1,200 or more.
  • “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles. Please see the MileagePlus Shopping mall site for details on product eligibility and other restrictions.
  • Please allow up to 10 weeks after the Bonus Period for bonus award miles to post to your MileagePlus Shopping account.
  • The Tier 3 bonus provides the maximum number of miles that will be awarded.

Tips & Ideas

Gift card purchases are listed as being excluded, but in the past it’s been possible to trigger the bonus miles from this offer by buying gift cards from Giftcards.com seeing as those kind of gift card purchases get tracked by the portal.

The useful thing about the United portal is that it has an in-store feature too. You link your payment card(s) on the portal, then you’ll earn MileagePlus miles when shopping in-store at participating retailers. Although gift card purchases are excluded for in-store offers too, that’s not necessarily enforced. That could therefore be a good option for hitting the spending threshold(s) for this type of promotion, especially when it can be stacked with Amex Offers, Chase Offers or Citi Offers for eligible retailers.

Compare rates on the United portal to those on other portals using Cashback Monitor in case you’d get a better return elsewhere even after taking into account the bonus miles that can be earned from this promotion.

Ordinarily, I’d be impressed. Biggest problem with this entire promo is the apparent utter collapse of the entire United miles program. Last year this time, United miles rates for various flights were quite good, competitive with the other major carriers. (AA, Delta, Alaska, JB, etc.) Now, the United system has gone crazy. Flights that once had best rates of say 10k to 12k now start at 60k….. (I tried a dozen different routes, all the same bad news, with the exception of long haul flights from SFO…. ) Was so depressed I put our United cards on the chopping non-renewal block.
