I was excited this morning to receive an email from Slide advising you can now buy even more gift card brands in the app including Home Depot, Nike and Newegg.
My excitement turned to dismay when reading further because it turns out that it’s part of a new feature called ‘Slide Selects’ which doesn’t offer 4% cashback in the app when buying the following brands:
- Home Depot
- Nike
- Macy’s
- Reebok
- Newegg
At first I assumed that this feature was a waste of time because why would you bother buying a gift card for these particular brands in the app for no rewards when you could just pay the retailers directly?
The feature is a little better than I thought it might be though because Slide lets you buy Slide Selects brands using your preloaded balance. You can earn up to 2% cashback when preloading your Slide balance and that 1-2% is credited when loading your account, so that’s 1-2% cashback (depending on how you load) on top of whatever you earn from the card you load from.
A reader reached out to give a heads up that even though you don’t earn 4% cashback from Slide when buying the gift card itself, there is an additional way to earn cashback when buying gift cards in Slide that isn’t earned in the app itself – it hopefully won’t be too hard to work out what that is. That means when combining that additional method with the 2% from preloading Slide, you’re looking at a minimum of 5% cashback total on these brands in addition to your credit card earnings. That’s not too bad for some of these brands and could get even better when that alternative source of cashback is temporarily more than 3% which is what’s happened a few times recently.
Why are you being opaque about topcashback giving 3% for Slide purchases? You’ve mentioned it before. It’s not a secret.
Because perhaps it’s not intended for Slide Selects.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be unless the terms explicitly exclude it.
Seeing as Slide isn’t offering 4% cashback when buying these particular brands, I’d assume they weren’t planning on offering cashback via portals either seeing as they don’t offer cashback via portals when loading your account with funds even though they do give up to 2% in-app.
I guess we need a data point. 😀
