Rakuten: Earn 2x On Gift Cards Purchased From Sam’s Club

Now this is unexpected. Gift card purchases are usually excluded on shopping portals, but for some reason Rakuten is explicitly offering 2% cashback or 2x Membership Rewards (depending on how your account is set up) when buying gift cards from Sam’s Club.

This clearly isn’t a glitch as they’d a) have to get special tracking in place for this and b) they’re specifically stating that you’ll earn cashback/rewards on those gift card purchases.

I’ve checked a few other shopping portals, but they’re still showing an exclusion for gift cards. It’d be great if that changes though as we’d then hopefully see occasional increases above 2%/2x.

Sam’s Club sells loads of different gift cards online. They have Visa and Mastercard gift cards, as well as discounts of up to 25% for some brands. During the holidays and other occasional times of the year, they offer discounts as high as 30%, so getting an additional 2%/2x on top of that is awesome.

Craig at Middle Age Miles is the one who gave me the heads up about this and he’s confirmed that a gift card purchase has already tracked for him.

As much as I’d love to see this be a permanent feature, I find it hard to believe that Rakuten will continue offering 2%/2x on an ongoing basis as I imagine they’re going to get hit hard with this. If nothing else, they’ll likely put some kind of limit as to how much cashback you can earn from Sam’s Club per day or per month. In the meantime though, have at it.
