It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway – please don’t go to Office Depot or OfficeMax just for the sake of buying these. However, these stores do sell some essential items, so if you’ll be visiting their store anyway, this can be a good opportunity to rack up some points.
There have been various issues with Mastercard gift cards in recent weeks and months, so there’s some risk there.
It’s also a shame that it’s a $13 instant discount rather than a $15 instant discount which is what they usually offer. Normally you can buy two $200 cards and make a small profit, but if you do that this time you’ll actually be paying $0.90 in fees. That’s still not a bad deal if you’re earning 5x on a Chase Ink Plus or Ink Cash card though. An alternative is to buy one $200 card and one $100 card as that’ll make you $0.10 profit. If you have a 5x-earning card though, you’ll still be better off buying two $200 Mastercard gift cards as the additional points you’ll earn will outweigh the extra $1 in activation fees.
